On the 31st of October 2009 the EDL held a march in Leeds city centre. Their political opposition, Unite Against Fascism organised a counter-protest. The meeting of the two parties, including the strong police presence, resulted in numerous clashes and outbreaks of violence. As an attempt to control the situation the police seperated the 800 or so EDL members from the 1,500 UAF supporters. Completely surrounded by a wall of heavily-protected police, the members of the EDL were contained in what the police refer to as a “kettle”. As no one was permitted to enter or leave, the atmosphere soon became hostile.
These photographs document the three hours I spent amongst them.
